Two Successful PhD Dissertation Defenses Held at IFMC.

Today, September 10, successful defenses of the dissertations by Alvard Timonina and Oleksandr Buravov for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty 102 “Chemistry” were held at meetings of the one-time specialized academic councils of SSI..

Alvard Timonina presented her dissertation entitled “Photocatalytic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aqueous solutions on oxide nanomaterials”. Academic supervisor — Konstantin Belikov, Ph.D. in Chemistry, Senior Researcher.
The dissertation contains new scientifically substantiated theoretical and experimental results that are of significant importance for the development of photocatalytic methods for water purification from Surface-active agents. The study established the regularities of the photocatalytic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in an aqueous medium, investigated the influence of photocatalyst properties on process efficiency, and developed composite photocatalysts with high activity and stability. The results obtained can be used to improve technologies for removing persistent organic pollutants from water.

Oleksandr Buravov defended his dissertation entitled “[3.3]- and [5.5]-Sigmatropic Rearrangements in the Synthesis of Polyfunctional Heterocycles”. Academic supervisor — Valentyn Chebanov, Doctor of Science in Chemistry, Professor, Academician of NAS of Ukraine.
The study discovered and investigated new [5.5]- and [3.3]-sigmatropic rearrangements, based on which new approaches to the formation of aryl-heteroaryl bonds were developed. Effective methods for the synthesis of azaindoles, azaindolines, and other complex heterocyclic compounds were also proposed, which are of significant importance for organic chemistry and are supported by publications in leading scientific journals.

The discussion of the dissertations confirmed their scientific novelty, relevance, and practical focus.

We sincerely congratulate our colleagues on their successful defenses! We wish them new scientific ideas, significant results, and continued professional success!
